Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Scrophularia root (commonly known as Chinese Figwort or Xuán Shēn) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is valued for its purported effects on "clearing heat," "cooling the blood," and resolving toxicity. In some classical TCM texts and formulas, Scrophularia root is included to address symptoms such as chest discomfort, tightness, or pain, especially when these are believed to be related to "heat" or "blood stasis" syndromes rather than cardiac ischemia or angina as understood in Western medicine. However, these uses are rooted in traditional paradigms and not in modern biomedical concepts of chest pain. There is scant scientific research specifically investigating Scrophularia root for the treatment or support of chest pain, whether cardiac or non-cardiac in origin. Most modern pharmacological studies on Scrophularia focus on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects, none of which have been directly linked to chest pain relief in clinical trials. Therefore, while traditional use does exist, the evidence is weak and not supported by rigorous scientific studies. Individuals with chest pain should always seek immediate medical attention, as chest pain can indicate serious conditions such as heart attack.
