Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sesbania, particularly Sesbania grandiflora (commonly known as agati or vegetable hummingbird), has been used in various traditional medicine systems, especially in South Asia and Southeast Asia. Traditional uses include applications for various ailments such as fever, inflammation, wounds, and sometimes for respiratory and chest-related complaints, including chest pain. The leaves, flowers, and bark are the most commonly used parts in these traditional remedies. However, there is limited documentation specifically tying Sesbania to the treatment of chest pain (angina or other cardiac-related chest pain) in the authoritative herbal or ethnomedicinal literature. Most references to chest pain are anecdotal, with some folk practices using decoctions or poultices for symptoms interpreted as "chest discomfort" or "cough with chest pain," often in the context of infections or inflammation rather than cardiac conditions. Scientific evidence supporting these uses is very limited. While some studies indicate Sesbania species have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, there are no robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly validating its efficacy for chest pain in humans. As such, its use is primarily justified by tradition, and the overall quality of evidence is low, reflected in the rating above.
