Vitex negundo, commonly known as the Chinese chaste tree or Nirgundi, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Unani, and traditional Chinese medicine. It is primarily valued for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties. In Ayurvedic texts, Vitex negundo leaves and roots are often recommended for conditions associated with "vata" imbalances, which can include chest pain (referred to as "uroga" or "uras shoola"). Preparations from its leaves are sometimes applied topically or ingested for relief of musculoskeletal pain, neuralgia, and in some cases, non-cardiac chest pain that may be related to respiratory or muscular issues. However, scientific evidence specifically supporting Vitex negundo’s efficacy in treating chest pain is limited. Most research has focused on its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in animal models, with few clinical trials conducted in humans. Studies have shown that extracts of Vitex negundo possess properties that could theoretically alleviate pain and inflammation, but direct evidence for its use in cardiac-related chest pain (angina) or other specific chest pain syndromes in humans is lacking. In summary, the use of Vitex negundo for chest pain is primarily based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation.
