Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bengal Fig (Ficus benghalensis) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and folk medicine in South Asia. In these traditions, various parts of the Bengal Fig tree, including the bark, leaves, and latex, have been used for a range of ailments, including fever and associated symptoms like chills. The rationale for its use often stems from its perceived properties as a cooling and restorative agent. Specifically, decoctions of the bark or leaves have been employed in some regions to help reduce fever, which could, by extension, alleviate chills since chills commonly accompany febrile illnesses.

However, there is scant scientific evidence to directly support the efficacy of Bengal Fig in treating chills specifically. While some laboratory studies have shown that extracts from Ficus benghalensis possess anti-inflammatory and antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties, these studies are preliminary, often conducted in animal models, and do not focus on chills as a primary endpoint. There are no high-quality clinical trials or pharmacological studies that definitively validate its use for chills in humans. Therefore, its application for this purpose is primarily justified by traditional knowledge rather than scientific validation.
