Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bergenia pacumbis (also known as Bergenia ligulata or Pashanbheda) has a prominent place in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. In these systems, it is commonly used for its diuretic, lithotriptic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The use of Bergenia pacumbis specifically for the treatment or support of "chills" is primarily rooted in traditional medicine, where chills may be considered a symptom of underlying imbalances or fevers. Some Ayurvedic texts mention its use in formulations for fevers and related conditions, which can include chills as a symptom. However, there is minimal to no direct scientific evidence or clinical research validating its efficacy specifically for chills. Most modern phytochemical and pharmacological studies focus on its antiurolithiatic, antimicrobial, and antioxidant effects. The evidence supporting its use for chills is therefore weak and largely anecdotal, based on ethnobotanical surveys and traditional literature references. No standardized clinical trials or robust scientific studies have been published to confirm its effects on chills in humans. Thus, its use for this purpose is justified by tradition, but with a low evidence rating.
