Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bombax (commonly known as the silk cotton tree, genus Bombax) has been traditionally used in various herbal systems, particularly in Ayurveda and folk medicine across South Asia. Its bark, flowers, and other plant parts have been employed to treat a range of ailments, including fever and chills, often as part of polyherbal formulations. However, the justification for its use in treating chills is primarily traditional, based on historical and ethnobotanical documentation rather than robust scientific evidence. There are references in Ayurvedic texts to Bombax being used for conditions associated with fever or “cold” states, which may include chills as a symptom. Despite this traditional use, there is a lack of clinical studies or pharmacological research directly investigating Bombax’s efficacy for chills specifically. Most available scientific literature focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, rather than antipyretic (fever-reducing) or thermoregulatory effects. Therefore, while traditional use as a remedy for chills exists, the evidence supporting its effectiveness is weak and mostly anecdotal, warranting a low evidence rating.
