Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) has been used in traditional European and Middle Eastern herbal medicine for a variety of ailments, including fever and chills. The use of chamomile for chills is primarily grounded in folk medicine, where it has been prepared as a tea or infusion to "warm the body," promote perspiration, and provide comfort during colds or febrile illnesses that may be accompanied by chills. Historical texts and ethnobotanical records frequently cite chamomile as a remedy for symptoms associated with the common cold, flu, and other conditions that involve chills. However, there is little to no direct scientific evidence or clinical studies evaluating the efficacy of chamomile specifically for the treatment of chills. Most modern research on chamomile focuses on its anti-inflammatory, mild sedative, and gastrointestinal effects, rather than its ability to address chills directly. Therefore, while its use is justified by long-standing traditional practice, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for chills is weak and mainly anecdotal.
