Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Eupolyphaga sinensis, also known as Chinese ground beetle, is an ingredient used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In the context of TCM, "chills" can refer to symptoms associated with "cold" disorders or patterns such as stagnation of blood and qi, or deficiency of yang. Eupolyphaga sinensis is traditionally used for its properties of breaking up blood stasis and promoting blood circulation, which may indirectly address symptoms like chills that are thought to arise from stagnation or deficiency. Classical TCM sources sometimes include this insect in formulas meant to "warm the channels" or "dispel cold" through its action on the blood, but it is far more commonly used for conditions like amenorrhea, trauma, or masses due to blood stasis. There is little to no direct mention in authoritative materia medica of its use specifically for treating chills as a stand-alone indication. Furthermore, there are no modern scientific studies that validate its use for chills, and the evidence remains at the level of traditional theory rather than clinical research. As a result, the justification for using Eupolyphaga sinensis for chills is rooted in traditional usage, and even there, the connection is indirect and not strongly emphasized.
