For the health condition: Chills
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Green onion (Allium fistulosum), also known as scallion or spring onion, is used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for the treatment of chills, especially those associated with the onset of colds or influenza. In TCM, green onion is thought to have a warming property and is often used in decoctions or porridges to "dispel wind-cold" and promote sweating, thereby helping the body counteract early symptoms of exogenous cold invasion. Historical texts such as the Shennong Bencao Jing and later TCM materia medica describe its use for mild cases of chills and to facilitate the resolution of external pathogens.
However, there is a lack of modern scientific studies that directly support the efficacy of green onion for the treatment of chills. Most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional usage patterns. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated mild antimicrobial and immune-modulating properties in Allium species, but these findings do not directly translate to a clinical effect against chills or the symptoms associated with them. As such, its use for chills is primarily justified by traditional practice rather than scientific validation.
