Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Indian Madder (Rubia cordifolia) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and other South Asian medicinal systems, primarily for its purported blood-purifying, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Its use for treating or supporting chills specifically is rooted in traditional practices, where chills are sometimes viewed as symptoms of underlying imbalances, such as fevers or infections. In Ayurvedic texts, Indian Madder is often included in formulations intended to improve circulation, reduce fevers, or address “cold” conditions in the body, which may indirectly relate to chills. However, there is little to no direct scientific research or clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of Indian Madder for chills as understood in modern medicine (i.e., the sensation of coldness often associated with fever or certain infections). Most scientific studies on Indian Madder focus on its potential uses in treating skin diseases, cancer, or kidney stones, rather than its effects on chills. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition, the evidence for its effectiveness in managing chills is weak and largely anecdotal, meriting a low evidence rating.
