Indian Redwood (Biological name: Caesalpinia sappan, also known as sappanwood or "Patanga" in Ayurveda) has been traditionally used in various systems of Indian medicine. In Ayurveda, it is valued for its blood-purifying, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties. The use of Indian Redwood to treat or support "chills" is primarily rooted in traditional medicine. In classical Ayurvedic texts, the bark and heartwood are mentioned as remedies for conditions associated with fever and intermittent chills—often symptoms of febrile illnesses such as malaria or other infections. The wood is sometimes used in decoctions with other herbs to manage fevers and associated symptoms, which may include chills.

However, contemporary scientific studies specifically investigating Indian Redwood's efficacy against chills are lacking. While there is some experimental evidence for its general antipyretic and antimicrobial activity, clinical trials addressing its use for chills as a distinct symptom are absent. Thus, the rationale for its use in treating chills is based on its historical and traditional application rather than robust scientific validation.
