Evidence supporting the use of: Mustard
For the health condition: Chills
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Mustard has been used traditionally in herbal and folk medicine to treat chills, primarily in the form of mustard plasters or poultices applied to the chest or back. The rationale behind this practice is that mustard seeds contain compounds (notably allyl isothiocyanate) that can irritate the skin, causing increased local blood flow (hyperemia) and a warming sensation. This warming effect was historically believed to help "drive out" chills and coldness from the body. However, there is very little scientific research to support the efficacy of mustard for treating chills specifically. Modern medical literature does not recognize mustard as an effective treatment for chills, and its use is largely based on anecdotal and historical accounts rather than controlled studies. While topical mustard applications can create a sensation of warmth, they can also cause skin irritation or burns if used improperly. In summary, the use of mustard for chills is justified by tradition rather than scientific evidence, and current medical guidelines do not recommend it for this purpose.
