Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Oregon Barberry (Berberis aquifolium), also known as Oregon grape, has been used in traditional herbal medicine by Native American tribes and early settlers in North America. One of its historical applications included the treatment of "chills," a symptom often associated with feverish illnesses such as malaria or influenza. The use is primarily rooted in tradition; there is little to no robust modern scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for chills. Historical records indicate that decoctions or tinctures of the root or bark were administered for general illnesses characterized by fever and chills, most likely due to the plant’s bitter principles and presumed tonic properties. The primary active component, berberine, has antimicrobial and immune-modulating effects, but clinical studies have not specifically evaluated Oregon Barberry for the treatment or prevention of chills. Therefore, while its use for chills persists in some traditional herbal practices, this application is not supported by scientific validation, and the overall evidence for this use is weak.
