Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Polygonatum species, commonly known as Solomon’s Seal, have a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine and other herbal systems. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Polygonatum (commonly Polygonatum sibiricum or Polygonatum odoratum, called "Huang Jing" or "Yu Zhu") is classified as a tonic herb, reputed to nourish Yin and moisten dryness, strengthen the spleen, and support lung function. Among its traditional indications, it is sometimes used for symptoms that may be associated with fatigue, weakness, or recovery from illness, but direct references to its use specifically for treating "chills" are sparse and not prominent in classical texts. Occasionally, it may be included in formulae aimed at supporting the body's recovery and balancing internal conditions, where chills might be a secondary symptom, such as after a febrile illness or when there is weakness post-infection. However, there is very limited direct traditional documentation specifically linking Polygonatum to the treatment of chills as a primary indication. There is also no significant scientific research validating its efficacy for chills. The use of Polygonatum for chills, therefore, is primarily based on broader tonic effects described in traditional systems rather than focused evidence or widespread historical precedent for this particular symptom.
