Evidence supporting the use of: Prepared Aconite Tuber
For the health condition: Chills
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Prepared Aconite Tuber (also known as processed Aconitum carmichaelii, or "Fu Zi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has a long history of use in East Asian medical systems. Traditionally, it is employed to “warm the yang,” dispel cold, and relieve pain—properties that make it a common ingredient in formulas designed to treat chills, cold limbs, or conditions associated with coldness and deficiency of yang energy. The rationale is based on ancient medical theory rather than modern biochemical understanding. The raw form of aconite is highly toxic, but traditional processing methods are believed to reduce toxicity while retaining its warming properties.
Modern scientific evidence for the use of prepared aconite tuber specifically to treat chills is limited and mostly anecdotal, coming from clinical reports and traditional usage rather than well-designed randomized controlled trials. Pharmacological studies have shown that certain alkaloids in aconite can influence circulation and metabolism, which might theoretically help with cold sensations, but concerns about toxicity remain significant. Overall, while there is substantial traditional justification, scientific validation is weak, and safety concerns persist. Thus, its use for treating chills is primarily supported by tradition.
