Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sophora flavescens (Ku Shen) is a traditional herb commonly used in Chinese medicine. Its primary historical uses include clearing heat, drying dampness, and treating conditions such as dysentery, skin diseases, and certain types of swelling. In the context of “chills” specifically, there is some traditional precedent for using Sophora flavescens as part of multi-herb formulas aimed at dispelling “wind-cold” or “damp-cold” from the body, which are traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) concepts sometimes associated with chills and fever. However, this use is not its most prominent or direct historical indication—the herb is much more commonly employed for its anti-parasitic and anti-inflammatory effects.

Modern scientific evidence to support the use of Sophora flavescens for chills per se is lacking. Most pharmacological research focuses on its alkaloids (such as matrine) for antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties, rather than for any antipyretic (fever-reducing) or thermoregulatory effects relevant to chills. Therefore, its use for chills is primarily supported by traditional practices within the framework of Chinese medicine, and the overall level of evidence is low.
