Evidence supporting the use of: Thaumatococcus daniellii
For the health condition: Chills
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Thaumatococcus daniellii, commonly known as the source of thaumatin (a natural sweetener), is used in various traditional African medicinal practices. Its application for treating or supporting relief from "chills" is primarily rooted in traditional medicine. In ethnobotanical literature, the leaves and other parts of T. daniellii have been employed by indigenous communities for a variety of purposes, including as a remedy for fever, malaria, and chills, which are often associated with febrile illnesses. For instance, some West African tribes use decoctions of the leaves or other plant parts as part of herbal mixtures aimed at reducing fever and alleviating chills. However, there is a lack of robust clinical or pharmacological studies specifically validating its efficacy for chills in humans. While some in vitro studies have demonstrated mild antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory activities in extracts from the plant, these findings do not directly translate to clinical effectiveness for chills. The rating is therefore low, as the evidence supporting its use for this particular condition comes almost exclusively from traditional knowledge rather than scientific validation. No authoritative clinical trials or pharmacological investigations have established a direct anti-chill or antipyretic effect for T. daniellii.
