Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Baccharoides anthelmintica (often referenced under its synonym Vernonia anthelmintica) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda and folk medicine in South Asia, where it has been used for a variety of ailments including intestinal worms, skin disorders, and as a general anti-inflammatory agent. References to its use in the context of cholera are sparse; however, some ethnobotanical records and old texts mention the use of seeds or extracts of this plant as part of polyherbal remedies for gastrointestinal disturbances, including diarrhea and dysentery, which are symptoms also present in cholera.

There is no robust modern scientific evidence or clinical trial data specifically supporting the use of Baccharoides anthelmintica in the treatment or support of cholera. The traditional use appears to be based more on its general anti-diarrheal and antimicrobial reputation in folk medicine than on targeted anti-cholera activity. Studies have shown the plant possesses some antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, but these have not been directly linked to Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of cholera. Therefore, its use for cholera is justified primarily by tradition, and the evidence supporting its efficacy for this specific condition is very weak.
