For the health condition: Cholera
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Capillary Artemisia (Artemisia capillaris), also known as Yin Chen Hao in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine primarily for liver and jaundice-related disorders. In the context of cholera, historical records from TCM and some folk medicinal systems occasionally mention its inclusion in formulas intended to alleviate symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting, which are prominent in cholera. However, these uses are based on empirical tradition rather than on modern scientific understanding of either the disease or the herb’s mechanisms of action. There is little to no clinical or pharmacological research that specifically investigates the efficacy of Artemisia capillaris against Vibrio cholerae infection or the severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance caused by cholera. The traditional rationale for its use may stem from its perceived ability to 'clear heat' and 'eliminate dampness', concepts in TCM loosely associated with treating gastrointestinal disturbances. In summary, while Artemisia capillaris has a well-documented place in traditional medicine, its use for cholera is supported only by historical precedent and lacks robust scientific validation.
