Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Hedyotis, particularly Hedyotis diffusa (also known as Oldenlandia diffusa), is a herb commonly used in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In these traditions, Hedyotis is reputed for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties. There are historical records and ethnobotanical accounts indicating the use of Hedyotis in treating various gastrointestinal disturbances, including diarrhea and dysentery, which sometimes overlap symptomatically with cholera. However, there is limited direct evidence or documentation of Hedyotis being specifically and consistently used to treat cholera in traditional texts, and its use for cholera is more inferred from its broader application for diarrheal diseases.
Scientifically, there are a few in vitro and animal studies demonstrating that extracts of Hedyotis species possess antibacterial activity against certain pathogens, but direct evidence of efficacy against Vibrio cholerae (the bacterium responsible for cholera) is either absent or extremely limited. No robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies have established Hedyotis as an effective treatment or supportive therapy for cholera in humans. Therefore, while its use is rooted in traditional practices for gastrointestinal illnesses, the specific application for cholera is only weakly supported by indirect evidence, and not validated by modern scientific research.
