Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Isatis (commonly Isatis tinctoria, also known as woad or Ban Lan Gen) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its purported antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. In the context of cholera, historical Chinese texts and folk medicine sometimes mention Isatis as part of herbal combinations intended to "clear heat" and "detoxify" the body, which is consistent with the syndrome-based approach in TCM. However, there is very limited direct evidence of its efficacy specifically against cholera. Modern scientific studies have focused on Isatis extracts for general antimicrobial activity and for use against respiratory viruses, not for Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of cholera. No major clinical trials or pharmacological studies support its use for cholera in the modern medical literature. Therefore, while Isatis may be included in traditional herbal formulas aimed at treating diarrheal diseases (which historically included cholera), the evidence supporting its effectiveness is based on tradition rather than rigorous scientific validation.
