Evidence supporting the use of: Lebbek
For the health condition: Cholera
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Albizia lebbeck, commonly known as Lebbek, has been used in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and folk medicine across South Asia. Its bark, leaves, and seeds are reported to possess astringent and antimicrobial properties. In the context of cholera—a severe diarrheal disease often caused by Vibrio cholerae—traditional healers have sometimes used decoctions or extracts of Lebbek bark as an adjunct remedy to manage diarrhea and associated symptoms. The rationale is based on the plant's perceived ability to reduce excessive intestinal secretions and possibly its antimicrobial activity against some pathogens.
However, there is very limited scientific evidence to validate these traditional uses specifically for cholera. Most of the available research focuses on the general antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory effects of Albizia lebbeck extracts in vitro or in animal models, rather than direct clinical efficacy in treating cholera. No robust clinical trials or substantial preclinical studies demonstrate that Lebbek can effectively reduce the duration or severity of cholera in humans. Thus, while its use is supported by tradition, the evidence is weak and should not replace established, evidence-based cholera treatments such as oral rehydration therapy and antibiotics when indicated.
