Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oldenlandia, particularly Oldenlandia corymbosa and Oldenlandia diffusa, is a herb used in various traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its use for cholera is rooted in ethnobotanical practices in India, Sri Lanka, and parts of Southeast Asia, where the plant is employed to manage gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea and dysentery, which share symptoms with cholera. Historical texts and ethnomedical surveys cite the use of Oldenlandia preparations (such as decoctions or infusions) as remedies for "loose motions" and severe diarrhea, conditions often associated with cholera before modern microbiological understanding.

However, there is only limited scientific evidence to support its effectiveness against Vibrio cholerae, the bacterium responsible for cholera. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated antibacterial activity of Oldenlandia extracts against a range of pathogens, but direct, robust evidence for efficacy specifically against V. cholerae or in clinical cases of cholera is lacking. Most modern references to its use for cholera are based on documentation of traditional practices rather than clinical trials or laboratory studies. Thus, the use of Oldenlandia for cholera is primarily justified by tradition, with only weak scientific validation at best.
