Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Agarikon mushroom (Laricifomes officinalis, formerly Fomitopsis officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Europe and among Indigenous peoples of North America. Traditionally, it has been utilized for its purported benefits against respiratory illnesses, including coughs, asthma, and tuberculosis. Anecdotal and ethnobotanical records suggest its use for lung-related conditions, which has led to its occasional mention in modern herbal literature as a potential support for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD). However, there is very limited scientific research specifically evaluating Agarikon’s effects on COPD in humans or in controlled animal studies. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated that Agarikon possesses antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties, but these findings are general and not specific to COPD. No clinical trials have been conducted to assess its efficacy or safety in COPD patients. Therefore, while the traditional use is documented, scientific validation is minimal, and any use for COPD should be considered speculative and not evidence-based.
