Evidence supporting the use of: Artemisia
For the health condition: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Artemisia, particularly species such as Artemisia annua and Artemisia absinthium, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems for respiratory ailments, including symptoms related to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) such as cough, phlegm, and breathing difficulties. In Traditional Chinese Medicine and other ethnomedicinal practices, Artemisia is often employed for its purported anti-inflammatory, expectorant, and antimicrobial properties. However, the historical use is mainly for general respiratory support rather than specifically for COPD as defined in modern medicine.
Scientific evidence supporting Artemisia's efficacy in COPD is limited and primarily preclinical. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Artemisia may possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, which could theoretically benefit airway inflammation associated with COPD. A few small-scale clinical studies have examined Artemisia compounds (notably artemisinin) for pulmonary conditions, but robust, high-quality trials in COPD populations are lacking.
Overall, while Artemisia is traditionally used for respiratory symptoms, there is insufficient scientific validation to support its use specifically for COPD. The evidence base is weak (rated 2/5), grounded mainly in ethnomedical tradition and preliminary pharmacological research rather than large, well-designed clinical studies.
