Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chenopodium album, known commonly as lamb’s quarters or bathua, has a history of use in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in South Asia. In Ayurveda and some folk traditions, Chenopodium album is reputed to have expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties and has occasionally been used to address respiratory symptoms such as cough, congestion, or bronchitis. However, its direct use specifically for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is not prominent in major ethnobotanical texts or well-documented in traditional medical literature. The rationale for its application is typically extrapolated from its general use for respiratory ailments and presumed anti-inflammatory effects.

From a scientific perspective, current research on Chenopodium album is limited and mostly focused on its nutritional value and some in vitro antioxidant or antimicrobial effects. There is a lack of clinical trials or preclinical studies specifically investigating its efficacy in COPD or similar chronic respiratory diseases. No authoritative guidelines or systematic reviews support its use for COPD management. Thus, while there is some traditional precedent for using the plant in respiratory conditions, the specific justification for COPD is weak and not well supported by scientific evidence. As such, the evidence rating for its use in supporting or treating COPD is very low.
