Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flavonoids are a diverse group of plant polyphenols found in fruits, vegetables, tea, and many other foods. There is some scientific interest in their potential role for supporting or treating Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. Several preclinical studies (cell and animal models) suggest that flavonoids such as quercetin, hesperidin, and catechins may help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the lungs, mechanisms that are central to COPD pathology. A few small human studies and clinical trials have explored the effects of specific flavonoids or flavonoid-rich extracts in COPD patients, with some reporting modest improvements in lung function, inflammation markers, or quality of life. However, these studies are generally limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and variable flavonoid sources and dosages. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews conclude that while the mechanistic rationale is promising, clinical evidence remains preliminary and inconsistent. There is no established guideline or strong consensus recommending flavonoid supplementation as a standard therapy for COPD. Overall, flavonoids are being investigated for COPD due to their biological properties, but robust clinical validation is lacking, and their use should not replace evidence-based medical treatments.
