Evidence supporting the use of: Hedyotis diffusa
For the health condition: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Hedyotis diffusa, also known as Oldenlandia diffusa or Bai Hua She She Cao, is primarily used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and its use for respiratory diseases such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD) is based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. In TCM, Hedyotis diffusa is believed to clear heat, detoxify the body, and resolve inflammation, qualities that are often sought in the management of chronic inflammatory conditions, including some respiratory disorders. However, while Hedyotis diffusa is commonly used for its purported anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects, especially in cancer and liver conditions, its specific use for COPD is less well-documented in classical or modern TCM literature. There are limited anecdotal reports and some small-scale studies on related respiratory conditions, but no strong clinical trials or mechanistic studies directly linking Hedyotis diffusa to COPD management. The evidence supporting its use for COPD is therefore weak, grounded mostly in tradition and the herb’s general anti-inflammatory reputation. No significant scientific studies have conclusively demonstrated its efficacy or safety for COPD. Thus, while traditional use exists, it should be considered with caution and not as a substitute for evidence-based treatments.
