Evidence supporting the use of: Notopterygium
For the health condition: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Notopterygium, particularly the species Notopterygium incisum and Notopterygium forbesii, is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb known as "Qiang Huo." In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Qiang Huo is commonly used to "dispel wind and dampness" and to treat symptoms such as headaches, body aches, and upper body rheumatic pain. Its application for respiratory conditions, including those resembling symptoms of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), is based primarily on TCM theory rather than modern biomedical evidence. While some TCM practitioners may use Qiang Huo as part of multi-herb formulations for cough and breathing difficulties, there is very limited, low-quality scientific research directly supporting its efficacy for COPD. The available modern literature lacks robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically addressing Notopterygium’s effects on COPD pathophysiology, lung function, or symptom relief. Therefore, its use for COPD is justified by historical and traditional use rather than by scientific validation, and the evidence supporting its efficacy for this condition is weak.
