Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oldenlandia, particularly Oldenlandia diffusa (also known as Hedyotis diffusa), is a herb commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Its use for respiratory conditions, including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), is rooted in tradition rather than robust scientific evidence. In TCM, Oldenlandia is believed to "clear heat" and "detoxify," and it is sometimes included in complex herbal formulas aimed at reducing phlegm, supporting lung function, or alleviating symptoms like cough and inflammation associated with chronic respiratory illnesses. Several TCM sources mention its inclusion in formulas for chronic cough or bronchial issues, but there is limited direct historical documentation specifically targeting COPD, as this is a modern clinical term. While there are some in vitro and animal studies suggesting Oldenlandia diffusa may have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, these do not directly translate to proven efficacy in human COPD patients. No high-quality clinical trials have established its effectiveness for COPD, and it is not recognized in international COPD management guidelines. Thus, the use of Oldenlandia for COPD is primarily justified by tradition, with weak supporting evidence and no consensus in the scientific community.
