Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ophiopogon japonicus, known as "Mai Men Dong" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for respiratory ailments, including symptoms that resemble those of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Traditional applications often include its use to moisten the lungs, relieve cough, and clear phlegm, particularly in cases characterized by dryness and heat. Several classic TCM formulas containing Ophiopogon are prescribed for chronic coughs and bronchial issues. However, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy in COPD is limited. A few preclinical studies suggest anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects, but robust clinical trials in humans with COPD are lacking. Systematic reviews of herbal treatments for COPD often mention Ophiopogon as an ingredient in multi-herb combinations but rarely as a stand-alone treatment, and the quality of evidence is generally considered low. Thus, while its use is justified primarily by tradition, scientific validation is minimal, and its effects in COPD remain unproven by modern standards.
