Evidence supporting the use of: Oxystelma
For the health condition: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Oxystelma, a genus in the Apocynaceae family, is traditionally used in some systems of herbal medicine, particularly in South Asia, for respiratory ailments. Ethnobotanical reports indicate that parts of the Oxystelma plant (such as Oxystelma esculentum) have been used in traditional remedies to treat coughs, asthma, and other respiratory issues. However, there is minimal direct historical documentation or widespread traditional use explicitly targeting Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) as defined in modern medicine; most uses are more general for respiratory relief. Scientific validation for Oxystelma’s efficacy in treating or supporting COPD is lacking. There are some preliminary studies on the phytochemical constituents of Oxystelma species, noting the presence of compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically benefit respiratory health. However, no clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies specifically support its use in COPD patients. Therefore, the evidence supporting Oxystelma for COPD is primarily traditional, with very limited strength and no substantial scientific corroboration at this time.
