Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rhizomes from various plants, such as Zingiber officinale (ginger), Curcuma longa (turmeric), and Rhizoma Belamcandae (from the iris family), have a long history of use in traditional medicine for respiratory ailments, including symptoms related to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), for instance, preparations using rhizomes are believed to help clear phlegm, relieve cough, and reduce inflammation in the lungs. Historical texts and pharmacopoeias often include these plants for chronic coughs, breathlessness, or wheezing, symptoms commonly seen in COPD. However, while there is abundant traditional use, modern scientific evidence directly supporting their effectiveness in COPD is limited, mostly confined to preclinical or small-scale human studies. These studies suggest some rhizomes may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which could theoretically benefit COPD patients, but robust clinical trials are lacking. Therefore, while traditional use is well documented and forms the primary justification for their use, scientific validation remains weak, and the overall evidence rating for their use in COPD is low.
