Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Tremella (often referring to Tremella fuciformis, also known as snow fungus or silver ear mushroom) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for supporting lung health and treating respiratory ailments. In TCM, Tremella is traditionally believed to nourish the lungs, relieve dryness, and address symptoms such as cough and sputum production, which are also common in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). However, direct scientific validation for Tremella’s efficacy in COPD is limited. Most of the available evidence consists of in vitro or animal studies suggesting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but these do not directly translate to clinical outcomes in human COPD patients. Clinical trials specifically investigating Tremella for COPD are lacking. Therefore, while its use is justified by centuries of traditional practice aimed at general lung support, robust scientific evidence for its effectiveness in COPD management is presently insufficient. The traditional evidence base rates as moderate (2/5) due to its longstanding use for lung conditions, but those seeking evidence-based treatments should be aware of the current lack of high-quality clinical research in this context.
