Evidence supporting the use of: Ashitaba
For the health condition: Circulation (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) has been traditionally used in Japanese and some East Asian folk medicine for various health conditions, including those related to poor circulation. The plant is believed to support blood flow due to its content of bioactive compounds such as chalcones, coumarins, and various antioxidants. Historically, ashitaba has been consumed as a tea or vegetable, with anecdotal claims that it helps "invigorate the blood," promote longevity, and support overall cardiovascular health. However, while these traditional uses are well-documented in regional herbal texts and folklore, robust scientific validation is limited.
Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that ashitaba’s chalcones may have antithrombotic and vasodilatory effects, which could theoretically benefit circulation. For instance, research has noted that certain compounds in ashitaba can inhibit platelet aggregation and may help relax blood vessels, but these findings are preliminary and not specific to clinical outcomes in humans with poor circulation. There are currently no large-scale clinical trials directly validating ashitaba’s effects on circulation in humans.
In summary, ashitaba’s use for circulation is primarily rooted in tradition, supported by limited preclinical data. This justifies a modest evidence rating, but more rigorous clinical research is needed before it can be recommended as a proven remedy for poor circulation.
