Evidence supporting the use of: Bromelain
For the health condition: Circulation (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bromelain, an enzyme complex derived from pineapple stems, has been studied for its potential effects on circulation due to its anti-inflammatory, fibrinolytic, and antithrombotic properties. Some scientific evidence suggests that bromelain may support circulatory health by reducing platelet aggregation (which can help prevent blood clots), promoting fibrinolysis (the breakdown of fibrin, a protein involved in blood clotting), and reducing inflammation within blood vessels. These mechanisms could theoretically improve blood flow, particularly in individuals with poor circulation due to conditions like chronic venous insufficiency or peripheral artery disease.
A handful of small clinical trials and animal studies have explored bromelain’s effects on blood viscosity and clot formation. For example, research has shown that bromelain supplementation can decrease platelet aggregation and enhance the breakdown of clots, which may be beneficial in managing poor circulation. However, most human studies are limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and methodological issues. While some practitioners and supplement manufacturers recommend bromelain for circulatory support, robust large-scale clinical trials in humans are lacking.
In summary, there is a plausible scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting bromelain’s use for poor circulation, but the overall quality and quantity of human research is limited. Therefore, bromelain may offer some benefit as an adjunct in circulatory health, but further well-designed studies are needed to establish its efficacy and safety for this specific purpose.
