Evidence supporting the use of: Cherry
For the health condition: Circulation (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cherries, particularly tart cherries (Prunus cerasus), have garnered scientific interest for their potential benefits in supporting circulation and cardiovascular health. The key bioactive compounds in cherries are anthocyanins and other polyphenols, which possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Several small-scale clinical studies and animal models suggest that cherry consumption may improve vascular function by enhancing endothelial function and reducing markers of oxidative stress and inflammation.
Research indicates that anthocyanins can help modulate nitric oxide production, thus promoting vasodilation and improved blood flow. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2011) found that tart cherry juice reduced blood pressure and improved arterial stiffness in older adults. However, these effects are generally modest and not universally observed across all studies. Moreover, while some epidemiological studies associate higher anthocyanin intake with improved cardiovascular outcomes, the direct evidence for cherries specifically preventing or treating poor circulation (such as peripheral artery disease) remains limited.
In summary, while the traditional use of cherries for circulation is less documented, there is emerging scientific evidence supporting their potential vascular benefits, though the evidence is preliminary and not robust. Larger, long-term clinical trials are needed to establish definitive recommendations. For now, cherries can be considered a supportive dietary addition for overall vascular health, but should not replace established medical treatments for poor circulation.
