Evidence supporting the use of: Citrus bioflavonoids
For the health condition: Circulation (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Citrus bioflavonoids, a group of plant compounds found in citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, have been investigated for their potential benefits in supporting circulation and vascular health. Scientific interest in bioflavonoids centers on their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vasoprotective properties. Some of the most studied citrus bioflavonoids include hesperidin, diosmin, and rutin.
Clinical studies, particularly those involving diosmin and hesperidin, have demonstrated some efficacy in the management of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a condition associated with poor circulation in the legs. These compounds appear to strengthen capillary walls, reduce capillary permeability, and decrease inflammation, which collectively may improve blood flow and reduce symptoms such as leg swelling and heaviness. For example, micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF)—a combination of diosmin and hesperidin—has been used in Europe as a prescription treatment for CVI and hemorrhoids.
However, while there is moderate scientific support for specific flavonoids in venous disorders, evidence for general “citrus bioflavonoids” as a category is mixed, and not all formulations have been equally studied. Most positive findings relate to standardized extracts at specific dosages, not generic or mixed bioflavonoid supplements. Larger, high-quality trials are still needed, and the evidence base remains stronger for diosmin and hesperidin than for other citrus bioflavonoids.
In summary, there is some scientific validation—especially for certain purified extracts—supporting the use of citrus bioflavonoids in improving circulation in cases of venous insufficiency, but the quality and specificity of evidence varies.
