Evidence supporting the use of: Fatty acids
For the health condition: Circulation (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Fatty acids, particularly omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have been scientifically investigated for their effects on circulation and cardiovascular health. Multiple studies and meta-analyses have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can reduce triglyceride levels, lower blood pressure, decrease platelet aggregation, and improve endothelial function, all of which contribute to improved blood circulation. These effects are particularly relevant in populations at risk for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, where poor circulation is a common complication.
Clinical trials suggest that supplementation with fish oil or purified omega-3 fatty acids may modestly improve vascular function and decrease the likelihood of developing peripheral arterial disease (PAD), a condition characterized by poor circulation. However, results are mixed regarding their ability to prevent major cardiovascular events, and the magnitude of benefit can vary depending on baseline cardiovascular risk and the specific fatty acid used.
The evidence base is robust enough to support the use of omega-3 fatty acids for the improvement of some markers of circulation, though not all trials have shown clinically significant benefits. Official guidelines (such as those from the American Heart Association) recognize omega-3 fatty acids as supportive for overall cardiovascular health, which indirectly supports their use in poor circulation, though they are not considered a primary treatment.
