Nattokinase is an enzyme extracted from natto, a traditional Japanese fermented soybean food. Its use to support or treat poor circulation is primarily justified by scientific research, though the evidence is still preliminary and not definitive. Nattokinase is known for its fibrinolytic (clot-dissolving) activity, which has been demonstrated in laboratory and animal studies, and to a lesser extent in small human trials. Several studies suggest that nattokinase supplementation can reduce blood viscosity, decrease clot formation, and promote the breakdown of fibrin, a protein involved in blood clotting. These mechanisms may help improve blood flow and overall vascular health. A number of small clinical trials have reported that nattokinase may reduce blood pressure and markers of blood coagulation, which could benefit individuals with poor circulation. For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in 2008 showed that nattokinase consumption led to a modest but significant reduction in blood pressure. However, high-quality large-scale human studies directly examining nattokinase’s effects on circulation are lacking, and most existing clinical evidence is indirect. In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and modest clinical support for nattokinase in supporting circulation, the overall evidence is limited (rated 2/5), and more research is needed to firmly establish its safety and efficacy for this use.
