Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Piperine, the major active compound in black pepper (Piper nigrum), has been used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine for a range of purposes, including to "stimulate circulation" or "invigorate blood flow." The rationale in traditional use is often based on the warming and pungent nature of black pepper, which is believed to promote circulation and alleviate symptoms of poor blood flow or "coldness" in the body. However, modern scientific evidence specifically supporting piperine’s direct benefit for poor circulation in humans is limited. Animal studies and in vitro research suggest that piperine may have vasodilatory effects, potentially aiding blood flow by relaxing vascular smooth muscle. For example, some studies have shown piperine can influence nitric oxide production and modulate calcium channels, which could theoretically impact vascular tone. Nonetheless, these findings are preliminary, and there is a lack of high-quality human clinical trials demonstrating clear efficacy for improving circulation. Therefore, while traditional use for this purpose is well-documented, the scientific validation remains weak, and current support for piperine’s use in treating poor circulation relies mostly on its historical application rather than robust clinical evidence.
