Evidence supporting the use of: Arginine nitrate
For the health condition: Circulation (to the brain)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Arginine nitrate is a compound that combines the amino acid L-arginine with nitrate. L-arginine serves as a precursor to nitric oxide (NO), a molecule that acts as a vasodilator, helping to widen blood vessels and potentially improve blood flow. Nitrates, similarly, are metabolized to nitric oxide in the body. This dual pathway suggests a theoretical benefit for improving circulation, including cerebral (brain) blood flow.
Some studies have demonstrated that L-arginine supplementation can increase nitric oxide production and improve endothelial function, which may enhance blood flow generally. Nitrate supplementation (as found in beetroot juice) has also been shown to improve vascular function and, in some cases, cerebral blood flow. However, direct studies investigating arginine nitrate itself, specifically for improving circulation to the brain, are lacking.
While the mechanisms are plausible and supported by indirect evidence, direct clinical trials of arginine nitrate for cerebral circulation are absent. The evidence for arginine (or nitrate) alone is moderate in improving vascular endpoints, but not specifically for brain circulation or cognitive outcomes in healthy people. Thus, while the theoretical basis is scientific, the direct evidence is limited, warranting a modest evidence rating.
