Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Ginkgo biloba has been widely studied for its potential effects on cerebral circulation and cognitive function. The scientific rationale for its use is based on both its traditional use in Chinese medicine and modern pharmacological studies. Ginkgo leaf extracts, particularly standardized ones containing 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones, are thought to improve blood flow by dilating blood vessels, reducing blood viscosity, and having antioxidant effects that may protect neural tissue. Several clinical trials have investigated Ginkgo's efficacy in treating cognitive impairment and dementia, with mixed but generally positive results for mild improvements in symptoms, particularly in elderly populations. Meta-analyses suggest that Ginkgo may modestly enhance memory, attention, and other cognitive functions, likely related to improved cerebral blood flow. However, the magnitude of these effects is typically small, and studies vary in quality and design, with some showing no significant benefit over placebo. The evidence is stronger for short-term use in mild to moderate cognitive impairment than for prevention or treatment of severe conditions. While Ginkgo is not a replacement for established medical treatments, and some concerns exist about bleeding risks and drug interactions, its use for supporting cerebral circulation and mild cognitive decline is supported by moderate-quality scientific evidence.
