Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Ginkgo flavonglycosides, the active constituents in Ginkgo biloba extract, are used to support and treat circulation, particularly cerebral circulation (blood flow to the brain). Scientific studies have provided moderate evidence that standardized Ginkgo biloba extracts can have beneficial effects on cerebral blood flow and cognitive function, especially in older adults and individuals with cognitive impairment. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses suggest that Ginkgo biloba may modestly improve symptoms in conditions related to impaired cerebral circulation, such as vascular dementia and mild cognitive impairment. The proposed mechanisms include vasodilation, reduction of blood viscosity, and antioxidant effects, all of which may enhance microcirculation in the brain.

However, while some clinical trials show positive effects, others demonstrate minimal or no benefit, and systematic reviews often conclude that the evidence is mixed or modest at best. The European Medicines Agency and other regulatory bodies recognize Ginkgo extract for symptomatic treatment of mild to moderate cognitive impairment and quality of life improvement in elderly patients. Nonetheless, the effect size is generally small, and there are concerns about variability in product quality. Thus, the use of Ginkgo flavonglycosides for supporting cerebral circulation is justified by scientific evidence, but this evidence is not uniformly strong, leading to a moderate rating.
