Nitric oxide (NO) is a well-studied endogenous molecule that plays a critical role in vascular health, including the regulation of cerebral blood flow. Its primary mechanism involves vasodilation, where NO relaxes the smooth muscle cells in blood vessels, leading to increased blood flow. In the context of cerebral circulation, nitric oxide helps maintain adequate perfusion of the brain by promoting dilation of cerebral arteries and arterioles.

Scientific evidence for the use of nitric oxide donors or precursors (such as L-arginine or inhaled NO) to support or treat impaired cerebral circulation is moderate. Clinical studies have demonstrated that nitric oxide can improve cerebral blood flow in certain contexts, such as during ischemic stroke or subarachnoid hemorrhage, where NO pathways may be disrupted. However, the benefits are context-dependent, and therapeutic use is generally limited to acute clinical settings rather than routine supplementation for healthy individuals.

While nitric oxide’s role in vascular physiology is well established, direct clinical applications for enhancing brain circulation outside of specific medical situations are still under investigation. There is no robust evidence supporting over-the-counter NO-boosting supplements for improving brain blood flow or function in the general population. Therefore, while the scientific rationale exists and there is some evidence from clinical and physiological studies, the overall level of evidence is moderate.
