Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Camelina oil, derived from Camelina sativa seeds, is gaining attention for its potential cardiovascular benefits due to its unique fatty acid profile. It is rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid, as well as antioxidants like tocopherols (vitamin E). Several small clinical studies and animal research suggest camelina oil may have beneficial effects on lipid profiles, including reducing total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, while possibly increasing HDL cholesterol. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases (2015) found camelina oil supplementation reduced total and LDL cholesterol in healthy adults.

The cardiovascular benefits are likely due to camelina oil’s high omega-3 content, which is known to have anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering properties, as well as its antioxidant activity that may help reduce oxidative stress, a contributor to atherosclerosis. While the body of research is still relatively small compared to more established oils like flaxseed or fish oil, the available scientific evidence supports the use of camelina oil as a functional food for circulatory health. However, larger and longer-term studies are needed to fully establish its efficacy and optimal dosage. In summary, camelina oil is scientifically supported—albeit modestly at present—as a supplement for circulatory system support.
