Evidence supporting the use of: Sea vegetation (unspecified)
For the body system: Circulatory System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Sea vegetation, often referred to as seaweed or marine algae, includes species such as kelp, nori, wakame, and spirulina. There is scientific evidence supporting the use of sea vegetation to support the circulatory system, primarily due to its content of bioactive compounds. Seaweeds are rich in dietary fibers, antioxidants (such as polyphenols and carotenoids), omega-3 fatty acids, and minerals like potassium and magnesium, all of which can positively influence cardiovascular health.
Several studies have shown that consumption of seaweed can help lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol levels, and improve vascular function. For example, a 2011 review in the journal Marine Drugs highlights the antihypertensive and lipid-lowering properties of various seaweed-derived compounds. Fucoidan, a sulfated polysaccharide found in brown seaweeds, has demonstrated antithrombotic and cholesterol-lowering effects in animal and limited human studies.
However, while the data is promising, much of the evidence is from small-scale human trials, epidemiological observations (notably in populations with high seaweed intake, such as Japan), or animal studies. More robust clinical trials are needed for definitive conclusions. Additionally, some seaweeds can contain high levels of iodine or heavy metals, which may pose risks if consumed excessively.
In summary, there is moderate scientific support for the use of sea vegetation to support the circulatory system, but further research is warranted for specific recommendations.
