Antrodia camphorata, a medicinal mushroom native to Taiwan, has traditional use in Taiwanese folk medicine for liver-related ailments, including cirrhosis. Modern scientific research has begun to investigate its potential hepatoprotective effects. Preclinical studies (mainly in vitro and animal models) suggest that extracts of Antrodia camphorata possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antifibrotic properties. For instance, several studies published in peer-reviewed journals have demonstrated that Antrodia camphorata extract can reduce liver fibrosis, inhibit hepatic stellate cell activation, and decrease markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in chemically induced liver injury models in rats and mice. Some studies also report reduced serum markers of liver damage (ALT, AST) following administration of the mushroom extract. However, there is currently a lack of large-scale, high-quality clinical trials in humans specifically examining its effect on cirrhosis or advanced liver disease. Most supporting evidence comes from preclinical models, with only a few small human studies or case reports addressing safety and potential efficacy. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary laboratory evidence supporting its hepatoprotective effects, the clinical effectiveness for treating cirrhosis remains unproven. More rigorous human research is needed before Antrodia camphorata can be recommended as a treatment for cirrhosis.
