Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Boerhavia diffusa (commonly known as Punarnava) has a long history of use in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda and Unani for supporting liver health, including in conditions like cirrhosis of the liver. In these traditions, the herb is believed to possess hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties, and is often prescribed as part of polyherbal formulations to manage symptoms related to chronic liver disease, including ascites, jaundice, and edema.

From a scientific perspective, there are a limited number of preclinical studies (primarily in animal models) that suggest some hepatoprotective effects of Boerhavia diffusa extracts, including reduction of liver enzymes and histological improvement in chemically-induced liver injury. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant activity, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, and modulation of inflammatory mediators. However, high-quality human clinical trials specifically investigating its efficacy in cirrhosis are lacking.

Therefore, the use of Boerhavia diffusa for cirrhosis is primarily rooted in traditional medicine, with some preliminary pharmacological support from laboratory studies, but insufficient rigorous clinical evidence in humans to definitively validate its efficacy for this condition.
