Evidence supporting the use of: Coriolus mushroom
For the health condition: Cirrhosis of the Liver
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Coriolus mushroom, also known as Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor), has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is called Yun Zhi. It has been used for various health conditions, particularly to boost immune function and support overall vitality. In some traditional practices, Coriolus is used as a supportive remedy for liver health, including chronic liver diseases such as cirrhosis. However, the historical use for cirrhosis specifically is not robust or well documented; rather, it is more generally recommended for liver support or detoxification in traditional herbal compendiums.
Scientifically, most research on Coriolus focuses on its polysaccharopeptides (PSP, PSK) for immune modulation and as an adjunct in cancer therapy. There is minimal direct scientific evidence that Coriolus mushroom can treat or significantly support cirrhosis of the liver in humans. A few preclinical studies in animals suggest hepatoprotective effects, likely due to antioxidant and immune-modulating actions, but clinical trials in patients with liver cirrhosis are lacking. Therefore, while there is a traditional precedent for its use as a liver tonic, robust evidence for its benefit in cirrhosis is absent.
In summary, Coriolus is used traditionally for general liver health, but there is little scientific validation for its use in treating or supporting cirrhosis of the liver, and the evidence supporting this use is weak.
